Programme:
Verdi: Requiem "Verdi's Requiem is a work of genius": so said Johannes Brahms. Some critics replied that Verdi’s Requiem was "his finest opera”, intending by this to mock his attempt to compose a religious work. Nowadays we recognise the Requiem as one of the finest works in the choral repertoire - by turns dramatic and lyrical. And yes, operatic. From the overpowering emotion of the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum ("The resulting combination of brass and choral quadruple-fortissimo markings resulting in some of the loudest unamplified music ever written"), and the almost oppressive atmosphere of the Rex Tremendae which creates a sense of unworthiness before the King of Tremendous Majesty, the Verdi Requiem leaves audience and performers alike with an overwhelming sense of having participated in a deeply moving experience.
