The oratorio Elijah was first performed in Birmingham in 1846 with the composer Mendelssohn conducting the English version that will be used for this performance.  Mendelssohn composed the score and the German version in parallel, based on the works of Bach and Handel, but in a much more operatic style.  The work was an instant success, with the Times critic writing: ‘Never was there a more complete triumph and never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art’.
Elijah was an immediate and tremendous success. Its great dramatic qualities, allied to its magnificent musical craftsmanship, appealed strongly to audiences and performers, and it has remained one of the most popular oratorios to the present time.
