Martin Bickerton is a “remarkable” and “impressive” English classical guitarist. He studied at Chetham’s School of Music before being awarded a major entrance scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, where he was awarded a first-class honours degree in 2011.

Martin was originally inspired, at the age of 10, by the composite lyrical and percussive qualities of the guitar. He studied with Craig Ogden, Gordon Crosskey, and later, with the generous support of the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, with Edoardo Catemario in Italy.
Martin currently studies privately with Paul Galbraith in Cambridge, before this he undertook studies with the late violinist Peter Cropper, formerly of the Lindsay Quartet.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Martin has performed at many prestigious venues including Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, the Purcell Room and the Wigmore Hall in London. He has also performed as part of the Lake District International Summer Music Festival and has been broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. In 2012 Martin was invited to perform for the Queen as a part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

As a young artist, Martin has been the recipient of several awards and prizes, as well as being supported by the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. More recently, in 2015, he was presented with 2nd prize and the ‘Interpretation Prize’ from the International Piñero Guitar Competition. In 2007 he recorded and performed at the World Youth Guitar Festival with the Eden-Stell Duo. Martin is a co-founding member of the Astrum Guitar Duo with whom he released his debut album, Inspirado Por España, in 2011. In 2017, Martin recorded and released his first solo album, Recital, after a successful crowdfunding campaign.
In his role as a tutor, Martin teaches at Yorkshire Young Musicians, Bangor University and Cheadle Hulme School. He also runs The Manchester Guitar Academy and regularly consults on the exam syllabus for Trinity College of Music. His YouTube series, Tuned Up, provides short tutorials for guitar students on a wide range of subjects.

Martin plays a 2009 7 string guitar by the English luthier Stephen Hill.
